Yes I take the following insurances: Aetna, BCBS, HealthChoice, Healthcare Highways (including WebTPA), The Kempton Group, NOMI (OKCFD EAP), United Healthcare/Optum, UMR
If I am out of network with your insurance provider, you pay my full fee and I can provide you with a 'Superbill' that you can submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. Some people have been reimbursed up to 70% of total cost.
-
If you're using insurance, I am required to provide a mental health diagnosis for billing purposes. Insurance companies also have the right to determine whether they believe you meet "medical necessity" for treatment, meaning they can decide at any time that therapy is no longer covered. If you prefer to avoid this, we can discuss private pay options, which allow for greater privacy and control over your care. My priority is to provide care that aligns with your comfort and needs.
-
It is your responsibility to check your mental health benefits. Call the customer service line on the back of your card and ask the following:
Does my health insurance plan cover outpatient mental health counseling?
Do I have to meet a deductible before my sessions are covered? If so, what is the amount and how much have I met?
What is my co-pay or coinsurance (percentage you pay after meeting your deductible)?
Does my plan have a limit on how many sessions I can have in a calendar year? If so, what is the limit, and can more be requested?
Do I need a written referral from my primary care physician (PCP) in order for services to be covered?
Is Kristen Callaway an approved in-network provider on my plan?
Can I please have a reference number for this call?
-
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.
You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
Therapy Approaches & Trauma Treatment
-
I take a trauma-informed approach, meaning I prioritize safety, choice, and pacing in therapy. Trauma isn’t just stored in the mind—it lives in the body. That’s why I use EMDR, somatic practices, and Polyvagal Theory to help regulate your nervous system while reprocessing painful experiences. You won’t be forced to “relive” your trauma. Instead, we work gently to help your brain and body process it in a way that feels safe and empowering.
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain process trauma so that distressing memories lose their intensity. Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound), EMDR helps the brain "re-file" traumatic experiences so they feel like past events instead of present threats. Many clients find that EMDR helps them process years of trauma more effectively than traditional talk therapy alone.
-
If you’re looking for faster relief from trauma, I offer EMDR intensives—extended therapy sessions designed to accelerate healing in a focused, structured way. Rather than waiting weeks between sessions, EMDR intensives allow us to make significant progress in a shorter amount of time, often leading to deeper breakthroughs and quicker relief from distressing memories. EMDR intensives are ideal for those who feel stuck in their healing process, want to resolve trauma more quickly, or have demanding schedules that make weekly therapy difficult. If you're ready to experience deep healing in a more efficient format, we can explore whether an EMDR intensive is the right fit for you.
-
Somatic therapy focuses on how trauma is stored in the body. If you experience chronic tension, hypervigilance, dissociation, or emotional numbness, these are often signs of a nervous system stuck in survival mode. Through breathwork, grounding techniques, movement, and body awareness, we help your system shift from a state of fight, flight, or freeze into a place where healing can happen. This approach is especially helpful for clients who feel “stuck” or struggle with traditional talk therapy.
-
That’s okay. Healing doesn’t require telling your story in painful detail. Approaches like EMDR and somatic therapy allow us to work on trauma without needing to verbalize every memory. Therapy is about finding what feels safe and effective for you.
Getting Started
-
All paperwork will be completed electronically before your first appointment.
Your first session is about getting to know you—your concerns, your goals, and what has led you to therapy. We’ll discuss your history, current challenges, and what you hope to gain from our work together. There’s no pressure to share everything right away; we go at a pace that feels safe for you. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, understood, and hopeful about the process.
-
Therapy is different for everyone. Some people find relief in just a few months, while others with deeper trauma or long-term struggles may benefit from ongoing support. I work collaboratively with you to adjust the process based on your needs. The goal isn’t just to feel better temporarily—it’s to create lasting change.
-
I prefer that clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum, but we can adjust to biweekly as you gain tools and feel more stable. The frequency depends on your goals, the severity of your struggles, and how much support you feel you need.
-
I offer both virtual and in-person sessions to accommodate different needs and preferences. Virtual therapy provides flexibility and accessibility, making it a great option for those with busy schedules or who prefer the comfort of their own space. In-person sessions are available for those who feel more comfortable with face-to-face interaction. Regardless of the format, my approach remains the same: providing a safe, supportive environment for healing.
-
That’s completely understandable. Not all therapists are the right fit, and sometimes, the approach wasn’t what you needed at the time. I tailor therapy to each person, using approaches like EMDR, somatic therapy, and parts work to address trauma in ways traditional talk therapy might not have. If previous therapy didn’t help, we can explore what was missing and find a way forward that works better for you.
-
You can schedule a session by contacting me here or filling out my online form. If you’re unsure whether therapy is right for you, I also offer a brief consultation to answer any questions and see if we’re a good fit.
-
That’s okay! Starting therapy is a big step, and you don’t have to rush the process. In the meantime, you can:
Read about different therapy approaches (learning about EMDR or trauma-informed care can help you feel more prepared).
Start journaling to explore your thoughts and emotions in a safe way.
Focus on small self-care steps, like deep breathing, setting small boundaries, or recognizing your body’s stress responses.
Whenever you’re ready, therapy will be here for you.
