  • It is your responsibility to check your mental health benefits. Call the customer service line on the back of your card and ask the following:

    • Does my health insurance plan cover outpatient mental health counseling?

    • Do I have to meet a deductible before my sessions are covered? If so, what is the amount and how much have I met?

    • What is my co-pay or coinsurance (percentage you pay after meeting your deductible)?

    • Does my plan have a limit on how many sessions I can have in a calendar year? If so, what is the limit, and can more be requested?

    • Do I need a written referral from my primary care physician (PCP) in order for services to be covered?

    • Is Kristen Callaway an approved in-network provider on my plan?

    • Can I please have a reference number for this call?

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

  • Anxiety at the start of therapy is super common, and I expect it. Our intake sessions will be structured as follows:

    • I will review confidentiality and limits and get your verbal consent that you understand.

    • I will review a few key items from my consents and policies forms to ensure you don't have any questions.

    • I will ask for a summary of why you wanted to come to counseling. Why now, why with me? What have you tried already to resolve things?

    • We will talk about what you hope to gain from counseling, and what your goals are.

    • What about counseling concerns you or gives you some hesitation.

    • I will give you time to ask any questions about me or the therapeutic process you may have.

    • If we both want to move forward with counseling, we will discuss scheduling and make the next appointment! If I'm not the best fit to help you, or you decide I'm not the counselor you want to see, I can provide referrals.
